Mobitel commemorates International Widows Day 2012

Pledges its commitment to better the lives of widows across the island

Women play many roles in the lives of any individual, be it as a mother, sister, daughter or wife and should be given the credit and respect they deserve from society. Women face many hardships today in the event of the death of their husband, as the security of the family stands at stake. As Sri Lanka’s National Mobile Service Provider, Mobitel, has come forward to commemorate International Widow’s Day with a series of initiatives to support the livelihood of widows, thereby giving them a form of self employment.

Under the initial stages of the project, widows living in any part of the country can register themselves as a Mobitel freelance dealer in their area. Mobitel believes that widows play a crucial role in a family by being the sole parent and only bread winner, and the company is looking out to ensure the protection, welfare and development of widows to build up a prosperous and secure family unit.

Positioned as a telecom brand that cares always, Mobitel has always been committed to support and strengthen the different segments of customers who will in turn form the people quotient that will power Sri Lanka’s growth to be the Wonder of Asia. By pioneering initiatives that specifically target the role of a woman in enriching our society, the company has continuously been a part of international forums such as the GSMA mWoman programme.

International Widows Day is the UN’s annual global day of action to address the poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries. International Widows Day was initiated by the Loomba Foundation in 2005 and officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly, on a motion by the Government of Gabon, on 22 December 2010. The first International Widows Day was launched by Lord Loomba and the Foundation’s President, Cherie Blair.

Mobitel pledges to support the actions of these courageous widows by providing them with the security that they deserve and consider it part of their national responsibility to the country and economy.
