Mobitel develops unique ‘HeritageSL’ mobile app for the Department of Archaeology

The National Mobile Service Provider Mobitel partnered with the Department of Archaeology for the launch of an innovative mobile app named ‘HeritageSL’ that provides unlimited free access for the public to explore Sri Lanka’s archaeology and cultural heritage. The location-based app which is designed and developed by Mobitel and functions on sophisticated iBeacon technology was launched in view of the 125th anniversary of the Department of Archaeology.

The ‘HeritageSL’ mobile app is a technologically efficient method that provides detailed information on key archaeological locations and artifacts which cannot be found through means of traditional research. The user-friendly app provides information right at the finger tips and ensures the availability of data at the necessary time and location, allowing users to be engaged in abundant information on Sri Lanka’s national heritage through a unique mobile experience from Mobitel.

The app will also enable the Department of Archaeology to promote national heritage and archaeological values beyond national boundaries, and act as a medium of information that could be used for publication, teaching, public engagement, communication and most importantly ensure the preservation of information related to national heritage and history. The free ‘HeritageSL’ mobile app could be downloaded on Google Play or App Store for the use of information seekers, sightseers and tourists.

The primary technology behind the mobile app, iBeacon is the latest mobile technology that creates a unique method of delivering location-based information and other services to compatible smart devices in an efficient manner. iBeacon transmitters are attached to key archaeological points-of-interests to communicate with the ‘HeritageSL’ mobile app that responds automatically and immediately when a mobile device is in close vicinity.

Meanwhile Mobitel as the designer and developer of the app, provided its technological expertise throughout the development process to deliver a superior quality service on behalf of the Department of Archaeology.

In future the app will be further developed to act as a digital storage and publishing platform for cultural heritage while also providing localised notifications as and when predetermined geographical locations are approached by the user. The app will also be extended further with additional content on key archaeological sites and museums, with further insight into the Department of Archaeology and deliver more interests and preferences on archaeological interests of ‘HeritageSL’ mobile app users.
